Good to hear you're slowly healing Jo and well done on writing such a huge number of words! I think publishing parts of it on Substack behind a pay wall is a great idea. Have you read Kathy Parker's SS Bless the Daughters? Kathy publishes chapters from her book and it's very powerful. Have a good week and take care 😘
Ps I was gutted to read the Observer article. I've read all of her books and I liked the second one the best. On reflection, so much of the content seemed very far fetched and I did think the extreme walking in Scotland in the third book was ridiculous. I don't question other memoir writers because of this, but I do believe integrity in memoir writing is absolutely essential.
I think memoir needs a rethink. There is fatigue in the market, for sure. And it’s possibly saturated. Im
Not an analyst. Ponderous writing about our lives can sit wonderfully here on the stack for our followers who like our stuff. Books, I think anyway, need a big fat alt.memoir to come along that refreshes the genre so it feels less of a format. Thanks for mentioning me btw. I like the name, and I am v into sharing good writing on here and not just churned out pap. (Failed is a brave word, and undeserved - ‘unmemoirist’ sounds a bit more enticing)
Thanks ever so much Kate I have now started as Substack called The Unpublished Proud Memoirist here https://linneyjo.substack.com I decided to start publishing chapters there and get some supportive discussions going. Very early days 😘😘
